What is a dark circle?

Dark circles can be a pesky concern that many of us face around our eyes. They often show up as dark patches that are a bit darker than your usual skin tone. Depending on your skin tone, these circles can have different shades, like bluish, purple, or brown.

Don’t worry—you’re not alone in dealing with them!

What is the reason for the appearance of a dark circle?

There can be not just one but many different reasons for dark circles. Let us explore these reasons so that we can treat our dark circles more effectively.

  • Sleep deficiency-

The primary cause of dark circles is our modern lifestyle. It’s become so chaotic that many of us can’t even tell when we are awake and when we are asleep. We’re often not getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep that our bodies need. It’s important to understand that these 8 hours should be continuous; sleeping 4 hours at night and then 4 hours in the afternoon is not sufficient. For optimal rest, aim to sleep for a full 8 hours straight.

  • Lifestyle factor-

When we think about our lifestyle, it’s not just about how much sleep we get. It also includes the foods and drinks we choose. If we can cut back on alcohol and steer clear of cigarettes, we can help reduce those pesky dark circles under our eyes and feel better all around!

  • Ageing-

As we age, it’s common to notice changes in our bodies and skin, and dark circles under the eyes can be one of those signs. It’s important to acknowledge that these changes—like a decrease in skin elasticity and a reduction in overall resilience—can be frustrating. You’re not alone in facing this issue, and it’s a natural part of the ageing process that many experience.

  • Screen time-

Most of us spend a lot of time in front of screens these days, whether on a phone or a laptop. This prolonged screen time is a major contributor to the development of dark circles under our eyes. The blue light emitted by screens can be especially harmful to our eyes, particularly when we use them in dark environments for extended periods.

  • Genetic-

The issue of dark circles can also be genetic. If your parents or grandparents have dark circles, it is likely that you may also experience this problem.

  • Anaemia-

Anaemia is a significant cause of dark circles under the eyes. When you suffer from anaemia, your red blood cells decrease, which can lead to a noticeable decline in your overall health. As a result of this deterioration and the lack of proper rest, you may experience the issue of dark circles.

  • Others-

In addition to the reasons mentioned earlier, there are several other factors that contribute to the appearance of dark circles. These include dehydration, hyper pigmentation caused by sun exposure, and the habit of rubbing your eyes frequently. Each of these factors plays a significant role in the development of dark circles.

Let’s explore some effective remedies for removing dark circle-

How to Make These DIY Ideas More Effective?

  • It’s important to drink enough water to prevent dehydration, which can affect the glow of our body and skin. A general recommendation is to consume about 8 glasses of water each day. Alternatively, you can calculate your water intake based on your body weight—drink 1 litter of water for every 10 kg of body weight. (50kg = 5 litter)

I am not an expert, so please follow these steps according to your own health needs.

  • Before going out in the sun, cover your eyes with sunglasses or use a sunscreen that is safe for your eyes.
  • It is important to sleep at least 6 hours a day. Ideally, you should aim for 8 hours of sleep.
  • Both alcohol and smoking increase dehydration in the body, which can lead to dark circles under the eyes. Therefore, try to limit your consumption of these substances or avoid them altogether.
  • It’s important to reduce your screen time. The blue light emitted from phones and laptops can have a negative impact on your eyes. It not only contributes to dark circles but can also impair your vision. To protect your eyes, make sure to enable eye protection settings on your devices or consider using UV-protected glasses.
  • If you wish, you can add active ingredients to your daily skincare routine to help remove dark circles, such as retinol, peptides, niacinamide, and vitamin C.
